Volvo S60 – review, safety, price

This cheaper brother of the big and powerful Volvo S90 is a prime example of how far Volvo has come since the days when its cars were clunky and angular with a hint of luxury. Drivers of this iconic brand were never bothered by not keeping up with the latest trends or cruising down the roads with the throttle on the floor. It was all about safety and being able to afford it. That’s why 2018 Volvo S60 is a shock.

What Volvo S60 reviews agree on:

  • Amazing looks
  • Very solid build, secure chassis and excellent drive
  • Quality infotainment and electronic system
  • Nice looking cockpit with lots of features
  • Driving dynamics
  • 5 star safety rating from NCAP
  • Expensive higher trim alternatives, especially the sporty R-Design
  • Lower power than competition
  • No dieasel engine
  • Rear seats too low

Volvo S60 emphasises driving dynamics – surprisingly!

Maybe because the strongest aspect of this sleek athlete is probably the ride itself. Even with the second-weakest engine on offer, you’ll hit 60kph in six seconds. The engine is literally lightning fast and in sport mode is as far from the rather sleepy Volvos of the last century as a tractor is from Mustang. What’s disappointing, however, is the lack of diesel engines on offer.

A spacious sedan with a rigid chassis that lets you take corners without leaning or oversteering. While the fairly stiff dampers can give you a bit of a knock, especially around town, there are no big bumps. Related to this is the fact that the steering is precise and you won’t get any late response.

The Volvo S60 feels natural and effortless. From the first moment you feel like you’ve been driving this car for a long time, that it belongs to you.

Comfort blended with luxury

The Volvo S60 combines some of the best technology to emerge in the automotive industry in recent times. Take the family for a ride and enjoy the comfort of luxury that technology offers. And that’s with a price tag of under €50,000.

Safety and practicality remains top priority

But what remains from previous generations is definitely safety, based on Volvo’s Vision 2020. The competition may not be sleeping and has caught up with Volvo in the basic parameters, but as a safety pioneer, it always tries to stay one step ahead. Apart from the expected safety functions such as blind spot monitoring or lane keeping assist, the system is even capable of performing an evasive maneuver and detect oncoming vehicles at intersections.

Given the brand’s focus on families, Volvo also couldn’t afford to compromise on practicality. Even though it’s a sedan, there’s plenty of room inside. You can easily fit a stroller in the trunk along with other items.

Volvo S60: stunning exterior, intuitive interior

One of the most talented designers of the time, Thomas Ingenlath, has given the car a graceful and relaxed face, yet it exudes elegance and sportiness. The headlight LEDs form the shape of Thor’s hammer, which is typical for the brand today.

The tasteful yet simple interior is complemented by a new infotainment system, which was desperately needed after the XC90. The S60’s dashboard and touchscreen is so intuitive that you won’t need any instructions. The same goes for the driving assistants. The car guides you flawlessly through traffic jams and tunnels, the blind-spot monitoring feels comfortable and so does the intelligent cruise control.
