The Yaris is one of the most important models of the Japanese automaker. Toyota has already sold over 10 million units of this small but very handy and, most importantly, affordable and feature-packed car. What does the 2024 Toyota Yaris bring after the latest upgrade, which may not be a new generation or a facelift, but there are more than enough useful changes and improvements?
The improvements come in three areas – performance, safety and infotainment. On the other hand, the design remains exactly the same with the exception of the addition of a new “Neptune” blue colour option and optional black 17″ wheels”.
What Toyota Yaris 2024 reviews agree on
Toyota Yaris Hybrid 130
The Japanese carmaker has managed to pack a lot of modern technology into a pocket-sized package that works really well in practice. The Toyota Yaris rightfully won the Car of the Year 2021 title and is successfully building on that legacy.
Upgraded infotainment
Inside, there’s a new up to 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an upgraded multimedia system. The look of the instrument panel can be changed according to the driver’s mood and route type. There are four display modes: Smart, Casual, Sporty and Tough. A 7-inch display is standard for the Comfort trim line, while the Executive, GR Sport and Premiere Editions feature a 12.3-inch unit.
The multimedia system features a new more intuitive interface with faster response times. Already in the basic equipment of the car there is a cloud-based navigation and a system of permanent internet connection.
A new feature is a digital key for up to 5 users who can unlock and lock the new Toyota Yaris via smartphone, adjust the air conditioning, activate warning lights, etc.
Emphasis on safety
According to Toyota, the new Yaris has been developed with the intention of achieving the status of the safest small car in the world, and as part of this, it introduces new safety features. The incorporation of a new camera and radar with a longer range in both longitudinal and lateral directions has resulted in a significant improvement in the range for detecting the risk of an accident. For example, the Pre-Collision Safety System (PCS) can now detect the potential risk of a head-on collision with a greater number of obstacles and vehicles in its own path – including pedestrians, cyclists and now motorcyclists.
Of interest is the Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS), which monitors the driver’s condition and is able to respond if he or she is unfit to drive. When it does not detect movement from the driver for a prolonged period of time, it will sound a warning. And if even that doesn’t wake the driver, it will slowly stop, trigger the warning lights and unlock the doors.
Other features such as Proactive Driving Assist, Deceleration Assist and Steering Assist help avoid the risks associated with driving at lower speeds and assist with braking and cornering.
New more powerful 130 hybrid
The new Hybrid 130 version is now available to complement the existing Hybrid 116. The new gearbox, together with a larger and more powerful motor-generator and revised software and hardware for the energy management unit, has resulted in a 12% increase in system power for the 15-stroke hybrid powertrain from 116 hp (85 kW) to 130 hp (96 kW).
There was also an increase in torque, with the maximum torque of the electric motor increasing by 30% across the rev range, from 141 Nm to 185 Nm.
The result is better acceleration, not only from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph), but especially when overtaking. The acceleration time from standstill to 100 km/h has been reduced by half a second to 9.2 seconds and the responsive acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h has been improved, now in 7.5 seconds.
In addition, the Yaris is very well soundproofed, which is at its best with the hybrid powertrain. Especially in the city, it can run more than half the time on pure electricity, which it stores up for braking and downhill driving. Real-world consumption can easily be kept below five litres.
