Opel Mokka 2021 – review, performance, design,

Opel is determined to prove that it is not just a German division of the former PSA, but that it can use the recipe and experience to develop cars with its own philosophy. Fortunately, the second-generation version, the Opel Mokka 2021, has all the necessary ingredients to become a vastly improved all-rounder then it’s predecessor.

Striking futuristic design falls short in practicality

The car looks like a sketch of a space shuttle from the near future. It’s simply a stylish car, but it won’t be for everyone.

At the front, we’re greeted by an all-new grille based on the brand’s new stylistic vision called the Opel Visor, which we already know from the Opel Crossland (although it was the former Mokka that came first).

There are full LED Matrix headlights, which work well, although at night they take a little longer to automatically switch from high beam to low beam. You can also tell from the bonnet that the designers have given the car a proper detox. Minimalism peeks out in all directions.

The boot, unfortunately, takes on the modern car’s vice of opening. To open the boot, you have to reach all the way over the edge of the number plate. In inclement weather, you can be sure to get at least a dirty sleeve. Trunk space isn’t exactly up to standard either, giving the Mokka a 350-litre capacity. It is therefore not a family car.

What Opel Mokka 2021 reviews agree on:

  • Original futuristic personality
  • Very comfortable and silent ride both inside and outside of the city
  • Efficient engines
  • Plenty of trims (Intermediate level above average)
  • Rather limited space in general
  • Ranks among more expensive variants
  • Nonsensically positioned trunk control button
  • Some interior plastics are of lower quality

Interior means detox and originality

The car definitely brings an original interior. It’s a stylish and cutting-edge design. And you’re basically immersing yourself in black. Too much actually – you can get a feeling of crampedness behind the wheel because of all the black around you.

Opel has followed a new strategy of visual detox, an attempt to simplify the interior as much as possible. It succeeded brilliantly. The interior is dominated by a comfortable, sporty steering wheel and the air conditioning is controlled by classic knobs. All elements that are important to the driver are directed towards him or her, so there’s nothing distracting the passenger in front.

Two optically linked screens combine a ten-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a digital instrument cluster. Of course, there’s also mobile phone connectivity, wireless charging, a pair of USB ports and just about everything a modern woman (and man) needs.

Opel Mokka 2021: an urban SUV

This short-overhang SUV is more suited to urban driving, where it fits in perfectly both dimensionally and design-wise.

In most situations, the gearbox cleverly uses the engine’s strongest mid-range and keeps it around 2,000 rpm at all times. This means that, even in the city, the Mokka doesn’t choke or annoy with rumbles or vibrations transmitted to the interior. Actual combined fuel consumption then hovers around 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

The comfortable suspension coupled with the 43 cm wheels with high profile tyres, is also pleasant for everyday living. The Mokka can handle most bumps on the roads without having to worry about damaging the rims. The steering is more cruising than sporty, but no one expects anyone to cut corners with the Mokka. On the motorways you’ll appreciate the acoustic comfort.

Opel Mokka 2021 motorisation variants

The Mokka is available in several engine options. Either the petrol turbo 1.2 with 74 kW or 96 kW or the diesel variant 1.5 CDTi with 81 kW. For green eco enthusiasts, there’s also a pure electric version that can offer 100 kW of power with a range of up to 320 kilometres.

The sporty GS line brings a more powerful turbo variant with 130 hp based on a petrol three-cylinder. Peak torque is 230 Nm at 1,750 rpm. The Mokka is also paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission with a hydrodynamic converter. Acceleration to 60 km/h takes place in 9.1 seconds.
