The most important change apart from facelift with the newest Volvo XC90 is the arrival of the B-engines. It’s still a diesel, but it’s been given a small electric motor that converts the kinetic energy gained from braking into electrical energy – so it’s a mild-hybrid.

The Volvo XC90 is available in 6 powertrains. Diesel, hybrid and petrol engines are available. The transmission is only offered as an automatic. Drive can only be 4×4. The most powerful of the internal combustion engines is the T6 AWD and the most fuel efficient is the B5 AWD 184kW.

The cheapest of these is the Momentum trim with a purchase price from €69,000 combined with the B5 AWD engine.

Plug-in is the best, but seems overly pricey

The most powerful of all, however, is a hybrid powertrain that pushes power up to 400 HP. The plug-on hybrid is complemented by an engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged, so the car has no problem accelerating exemplarily. On electric power alone, the car will go 30 kilometres. But this is also reflected in the price tag, which rises to a staggering €88,000.

XC 90 puts on a classy and elegant look

Today’s global lineup of premium SUVs look a bit bloated with sharp elbows . In contrast, the XC90, Volvo’s largest SUV, shows off some unusually elegant shapes. Subtle lines beari the DNA of modern Scandinavian cars and look fresh. But don’t be fooled. The XC90 is a classic modern SUV mastodon. It’s just five centimetres short of five metres and with a wheelbase of almost three metres .

Plenty of room inside, but the infotainment…

There’s plenty of room inside for all passengers, whether there are two or seven. In the absence of a third row of seats, you get a ton of cargo space – up to 1886 litres with the seats folded down.

The driver’s cabin then plays a classic song for modern Volvos. The entire dashboard is tidy, minimalist and clean. All that’s left of the buttons is the media controls. The rest has moved to a large vertical display. Not good news for those who are opposed to touch controls. The infotainment suffers from the same syndrome as many other cars: it feels outdated and its controls are clunky.
