Toyota Yaris Cross 2023

In the sea of crossovers on the market, the Toyota Cross 2023 will definitely not be one of the more affordable or extravagant in design. It does have its triumphs, however, and they’re the ones you’ll appreciate most: not many crossovers offer a 15-cylinder gasoline engine, automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive.

Toyota is playing the best possible card, bringing customers a crossover with a technically advanced underpinnings. The Yaris Cross falls into the SUV category with its body, but its small size makes it look more like a crossover. You can compare the Toyota Yaris Cross with the Opel Crossland X, for example.

  • Attractive and original design
  • Hybrid has low fuel consumption
  • 4×4 drive does a lot
  • A truly functional hybrid
  • Higher purchase price (but adequate quality)
  • Uninteresting interior
  • Automatic gearbox sometimes behaves confusingly
  • Not much room in the rear seats
  • Noise on acceleration

Well-built Interior with better multimedia

Drivers will be pleased with the overall build quality, the ergonomically friendly driving environment, the good view of the road ahead, or the many storage compartments. But even so, the interior feels a little drab and uninteresting. The all-new multimedia system is to be commended, as it has finally been given the appropriate graphics and functionality and its operation is intuitive and very quick. Compared to the RAV4, for example, it’s a big step forward.

The boot in the four-wheel-drive version is rather modest at 320 litres, but in the front-wheel-drive version it’s 396 litres, which is plenty, especially for urban living. However, space is limited in the second row of seats, where we wouldn’t recommend sitting three people.

Four motorisation options

The Yaris Cross comes in four different engine options, and all of them burn petrol-free. At the heart of the range is a conventional 15-cylinder Dynamic Force petrol engine with a maximum output of 123bhp, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox that transfers power to the front wheels.

The other Dynamic Force specification is the same unit, only instead of a manual there is an automatic Multidrive transmission.

You can also reach for the hybrid drive, which offers two variants. In both cases, it works with the e CVT automatic transmission. The hybrid drive has the advantage of being able to choose between front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The hybrid drive combines a 15-stroke engine with a maximum output of 88 hp. The maximum output of the hybrid system is then 85 kilowatts or 116 horsepower. In city traffic, you can then also drive purely on electric power.

However, some may perceive the three-cylinder engine – or at least its sound – as a handicap.

Vast trim options

The car can be configured in four trim levels. For example, the base version with the Active designation includes automatic climate control, 16″ steel wheels with full-width hubcaps, the Toyota Touch® 2 multimedia system and a wide range of safety equipment.

The second trim level, Comfort, adds 16″ alloy wheels, an 8″ Toyota Touch® 2 multimedia system, or a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-wrapped shifter head.

The third and fourth Executive and Adventure grades are exclusively associated with hybrid units. Equipment is very rich in both cases: there are Bi-LED headlights, 18″ alloy wheels, Toyota Smart Connect® multimedia system with HD touchscreen (9″), front and rear parking sensors, heated wipers and steering wheel, keyless unlock and start or wireless mobile phone charging.
